How often have you seen “Geeks” as the title of a class of customer?
It occurs to me that the Virtual Private Server is a perfect solution for those of us who understand servers, the Internet and TCP/IP. While many are happy with DSL hosted servers, or with colocation services, the Virtual Private Server is a valuable tool for high-reliability Internet computing.
Consider a FreeBSD environment (that can run the entire suite of open-source Unix applications, as well as Linux binaries). It’s in a professionally staffed data center, monitored 24/7, backed up three ways every day. Yesterday’s backup is online and available to you, in case you need a file restored.
Your server comes with sendmail, pop and imap, and, of course, Apache and MySQL. You can install Mailman, an LDAP server, Postnuke, whatever your needs.
Your server is set up for virtual sub-hosting of an unlimited number of domains with web sites, email accounts and forwarding, as well as shell accounts, using Telnet, FTP and SSH. You can install your own certificate.
You have root on your server, access to all logfiles and utilities, a quota system and just about anything you could do on a standalone box. You can even “reboot” it.
