My name is Ed Greenberg, and I operate this site and the associated small hosting business.
I started out as a non-business service provider to several friends, using a Linux server and a DSL line. I hosted mailman, web-sites, email boxes and email forwarding. I ran my own name server and sendmail server on the box.
This worked out pretty well for about four years. There were occasional wiring outages which took two or three days to repair each time, but the providers eventually got it right and the line became reliable, until September 2003 when the link went down hard.
A ten email-box business was knocked off the air. This business was unable to serve it’s customers and was threatened with extinction. Several organizations and personal websites were also gone. I could not receive any email of my own. My provider could not even begin to quote me a time-to-resolve.
I realized that I had to get the people dependent on my back on the air quickly. and I started a VIrtual Private Server using a friend who is a Verio reseller. He had my server up that morning, and I had all critical services restored that night. Since the new server was costing me hard cash, I solicited several of the profit-making server inhabitants to help pay for it. They all wanted invoices, and I realized that I was now “in business.”
With a server to fill, I started my small business. My initial goal was to generate enough revenue to pay for the server, while properly tracking my expenses to eliminate any unwarranted tax liability on the “contributions.”
I discovered that my personal attention to web and Internet services were valuable to people, and that I was recruiting new customers.
The VPS allows me to offer customers reliable, high-speed websites, email boxes, mailing lists, etc. I never have to worry about backups, outages, or other disasters normally experienced by provider-owned equipment, whether colo or DSL hosted.
